Hey Geronimo from Australia will perform tonight at NH7 Weekender. Vocalist Pete Kilroy told Iknoor Kaur about fusion of three decades in their music
Ever wondered what a mix of the 60s’ rock and roll, the 80s’ pop and the 90s’ alternative rock would sound likeIJ Hey Geronimo is what you need to listen to in that case. Inspired by the genres of three decades, this band is a group of five men who not only know how to make you rock and roll but also sing and dance. They are in the city to perform on the Red Bull Tour Bus at the NH7 Weekender tonight.
Having visited Bengaluru, Mumbai and Pune already, they will be playing some contemporary music in Delhi, said vocalist Pete Kilroy. “We will play a single called lazer Gun Show which is a bit more of a contemporary, but electro-rock and roll-pop song. It is like a festival anthem as well. Another song that we can’t wait to play is Why Don’t We Do SomethingIJ One cannot resist but sing along this track. We like to play music that the audience connects to and will remember at a festival. It is called the happiest festival in India and I think our kind of music suits that vibe,” he said.
Pete feels that India is the most colourful country he’s seen in a long time. “We started our tour in Bengaluru and then went on to Mumbai and Pune. The drive to Pune was great. Every city looked different,” he shared.
Though an indie pop band, Pete feels that for someone who has never heard their music before, it is “a mix of rock and roll, pop and funk, but in a modern way. We have tried to contemporise it a little bit. However, the 60s have a very heavy influence on our music, so rock and roll is the most significant beat of all. Our songs are basically like pop songs of the 80s,” he said.
The five of them met at a Beatles tribute show where they played together for the first time. Pete elaborated, “We had such a great time that we decided to make it a permanent band. So we rolled in from there and made sure that our music made people have fun,”
Most of the band’s music is formed when they are relaxing. Pete said, “A sunny, beachy and relaxed atmosphere is all we need to make our music. When we make music with a fun mindset, the song turns out to be fun too.”
Hey Geronimo has also collaborated with Indian artistes on this trip. “We met Raghu Dixit and a few more Indian artistes. I think they have a great sense of music. We also got a chance to write some stuff with them and we did a little collaboration. We hope to stay in touch with them after we return to Australia,” he said.
