NGMA’s workshop brings together over 250 Indian artists to paint a part of the 750-meters-long scroll depicting lives and struggles of unsung heroes of India’s freedom movement

As the nation celebrates 75 years of India’s independence, the National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA), New Delhi has organised a week-long art workshop till the December 17 in Bhubaneshwar titled, ‘Kala Kumbh — Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’. The scrolls are being painted as per the artistic vision of Adwait Garanayak, DG, NGMA.

The workshop brings together over 250 artists from across the country to paint part of the 750-meter-long scroll depicting the heroic lives and struggles of unsung heroes of India’s freedom movement. These scrolls will be an integral part of the Republic Day Celebrations in 2022.

“Any history of the independence movement would be incomplete without recounting the foremost role played by the masses and in particular by women. Through the narrations in the scrolls, we are trying to give an artistic representation of the tales of valour and sacrifice of our unsung heroes,” said Temsunaro Jamir, director of NGMA.

At Bhubaneswar, the narratives would reflect the tales of valor from Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Bengal, north eastern parts of India and Andhra Pradesh with artistic expressions reflecting the indigenous forms of art such as pattachitra, talapatra chitra, manjusa, madhubani and jadupatua to name a few.

As the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi takes these workshops to other parts of the country, many more forms of indigenous art will used to weave the stories of our unsung heroes which will be a befitting artistic tribute to their contributions to the freedom movement.
