Stana Katic rose to fame with the character of Kate Beckett in Castle. She revealed how playing a woman with great integrity changed her as a person
Do you identify yourself with your character Kate BeckettIJ
I admire Kate tremendously. I think the character has great integrity and a soft heart. She is a woman in authority and over the past six seasons we’ve had a chance to see many of the different qualities that make up a woman in her position. She is strong, vulnerable, romantic, insecure, loving and protective. I think that’s why so many young women relate to her and male audiences find her engaging. She’s complex and in spite of best efforts, she doesn’t always choose well. Even when she fails, she doesn’t give up. That tenacity and desire to help others is what makes her heroic.
How difficult is it to perform when the director changes several times during a seasonIJ
We have about 10-15 directors every season as they rotate through the stories. The directors are all very well-prepared and are familiar with the type of story we are telling. I’m never nervous about working with various directors we’ve had so far. After all, they are my teammates and fellow creatives. Of course, it’s nice to work with the regulars because you develop a shorthand over time and that becomes invaluable while trying to tell more ambitious stories.
If Castle and Beckett gets married in the seventh season, will the show go off airIJ
Castle went missing at the end of season 6 and in the beginning of seventh season we will be looking for him. Yes, Kate and Castle will get married in the season and I don’t believe marriage needs to mean an automatic end. The best, most dramatic moments in a couple’s life often happens after “I do”.
What do you feel is more difficult — television or moviesIJ
They’re very different experiences. Film is exciting because it has a clear beginning, middle and an end. It demands an incredible amount of risk and faith in the story and in your fellow storytellers. Standing on that precipice is exhilarating. Television, however, is evolving into a new beast. The stories are more ambitious. In this new format, people are telling film-quality tales over longer periods of time (10 and more episodes). It’s exciting because now we can really take time to set the stage and create a story arc. I’m incredibly impressed with the developments on this front.
Please share with us your experience of being the Bond girl in Quantum of Solace.
The Bond films are a part of a global mythology at this point. It is for this very reason that I feel special to have had a hand in telling one of them.
Are there any plans of shooting a movie in IndiaIJ
I’ve visited India and I have had a profound experience. It would be an honour to make a film there. I met so many wonderful people during my visit. It was enriching to learn about the culture and I could not stop marvelling at the beautiful landscape.
Once Castle concludes, will you be able to step out of Kate’s shoesIJ
My journey with Castle has been amazing. And as I move forward in my career, I know that this character and this story will always be an incredibly sweet memory. Being part of the show has changed my life. I am forever grateful to the creators who gave me the chance to luxuriate in a role like Kate Beckett and to the fans who have joined us on this journey and sustain us. My life will never be the same.
What can the audience look forward to in season 7 ofCastleIJ
In all these years, Castle’s life has been shrouded in mystery which will be revealed one at a time in the season. We also have a few fun episodes coming up. One takes place in the Old West. We also filmed an alternate reality episode in which Beckett have Castle have never met. And somewhere in the season, they will get married.
What is it like working opposite to Nathan FillionIJ
We are great colleagues. A story like ours doesn’t succeed without a good bounce between the characters. I am fortunate enough to have a whole team of wonderful actors to work with.
What about your forthcoming film TheTouristIJ
It’s in the edit room now. I’ve also begun work on Elephant Winter which I’m producing. I recently had a meeting with the writer on the first draft of the script. He’s a wonderful writer and has taken a beautiful approach, which is making the entire development experience very rewarding.
(The show will air on Star World Premiere HD)
