Shane and Falguni designed a sheer black dress with baroque detailing for Jennifer lopez’s recent performance. Falguni spoke to D Kaushik
You know you are brilliant when someone like Madonna, lady Gaga, Katy Perry or Jennifer lopez trust you for dressing them up. There are selected Indian designers who have managed to forge such strong bond with Hollywood divas, known for their unique dressing style that they return to them every time they want something special. And Shane and Falguni seem to top the list. The designer duo that has been a regular at New York fashion weeks and international runways has another feather in their proud cap. Jennifer lopez was spotted in a custom-made outfit by Shane and Falguni while she performed at the Billboard 2014 Music Awards.
In a sheer black net body suit with elaborate metallic gold and crystal work, Jlo opened the show. The geometric and baroque detailing gave her an edgy punk meets classic old world appeal while she performed on We Are One (Ole Ola) along with Pitbull and Claudia leitte. Falguni says that while designing for the singer, they always keep in mind her sense of dressing, personality and also take into account the songs that she will be performing on and the stage design. “We always love working with Jlo and her team. After we dressed her for the first time for the American Idol performance, she loved our creations and trusts us to create something which matches her design sensibility. We understand her style and are always looking to create something fierce and sexy for her. We knew that the colour has to be black and punk went with her look very well. Also, while designing for Jlo we keep in mind that she is an excellent dancer known for her signature moves. So the dress needs to have an element to add motion or swing and compliment her moves, therefore you will see a lot of tassles. This time we used gold and other metallic chains,” said Falguni adding that the artiste is very particular about the design that she wants. “She likes things to be edgy, things that define her taste,” said Falguni.
Shane and Falguni are known to design for celebrities like Paris Hilton, Rihanna, Britney Spears, Fergie among many others in the past. Thanks to their international commitments and fashion weeks, we hear very less of them in India, but Falguni says that after they opened a store in Delhi last year, they have been focussing on the Indian market as well.
“We have plans to open four more stores here. Pret has great demand in India. It is an important market to us but it is only because of our international commitments that our hands are too full at present. There are many interesting things in pipeline already,” informed Falguni.
