The Special Electricity Court (Rohini) of Swarana Kanta Sharma, additional session judge, North West District while hearing cases against power theft said that electricity theft is still taking place in Delhi in one way or the other. The Court determined Civil liability to the tune of Rs3,77,930 for meter tampering, stealing electricity for industrial and domestic usage against power thieves.
Several cases have been settled and in each case, TPDDl’s enforcement team booked a case against erring consumers and issued theft bills in their names. The FIRs were then registered and after trials faced by the accused, the special electricity court, found them guilty for theft of electricity and accordingly convicted them.
While giving the judgements, Sharma suggested that in order to prevent power theft and to make consumer aware holograms seals should be affixed on the meter and meter box. She also mentioned most of the consumers including educated and uneducated ones are unaware that it is their duty to maintain the safe custody of their electricity meters including seals put by the power distribution companies.
