Supported and led by Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Embassy of the Czech Republic in New Delhi, the concerts were held to mark the  70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Czech Republic.

The concerts were organised in New Delhi, Mumbai, Goa and Kolkata from January 12 to 19.

led by Kolkata-born conductor Debashish Chaudhuri, the orchestra consisted of 56 musicians, with this being the second time the orchestra was touring and performing in India. Earlier, in 2016 the orchestra had sold out concerts in Delhi and Kolkata. The concerts received overwhelming and unprecedented response from the audience across all the cities. Not only did these concerts provide a great platform to promote and showcase the best of Czech and European classical music to a discerning Indian audience but it was also an opportunity to young Indian musicians who aspire to play western classical instruments, a firsthand experience of playing in a symphony orchestra.

Speaking about the event, Pavel Maco, CEO and Home Credit India Finance, said, “After the resounding success of the Martinu Czech Philharmonics’ concerts in 2016, we are proud to be associated with the orchestra and having partnered with the Embassy in their endeavour to promote cultural ties between the two countries. Music is a great platform in bringing people from two countries together and this series of concerts helped us achieve that.”

Besides promoting the cultural and business activities of Czech in India, the concerts aimed to support needs of underserved people in rural India. In fact, part of the proceeds from the concert in Mumbai will be used for building toilets.

The Martinu Czech Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the best in the Czech Republic, was established in 1920 in the city of Zlin as part of the Bata shoe making factory under the name of Bata Symphony Orchestra.
