Obesity has emerged as a serious public health challenge shaped by our daily choices, writes Abhi Singhal
In a world where convenience has become king and sedentary lifestyles are the norm, the rise of obesity has turned into a silent public health crisis — one that affects our bodies far beyond the waistline. What was once seen as a condition of excess is now recognised as a complex interplay of diet, activity, stress, and environment.
India, like much of the world, is witnessing a sharp increase in obesity across age groups. According to the latest National Family Health Survey, nearly one in four Indian adults is now overweight or obese. Alarmingly, childhood obesity too is on the rise — with more than three per cent of children under five falling into the overweight category. It’s a trend that not only raises health alarms but also prompts a larger question: how did we get here, and more importantly, how do we get out?
Obesity is not just about appearance but more than that it is also about risk.
The more weight one carries beyond a healthy limit, the greater the likelihood of developing serious conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension and even certain cancers. Excess body fat, especially around the waist, is linked to increased inflammation and metabolic issues that can silently deteriorate overall health.
Combating obesity doesn’t require extreme diets or fitness fads. It begins with embracing small, sustainable changes — ones that can be woven into the rhythm of everyday life. Here’s how: Ways to Tackle Obesity and Embrace a Healthier Life
Rethink Your Plate
A balanced diet doesn’t mean giving up flavour — it means bringing awareness to what’s on your plate. Focus on whole foods: seasonal fruits, vegetables, pulses, whole grains, and nuts. Reduce the use of refined sugar, saturated fats, and excess salt. As in the 119th episode of Mann Ki Baat Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently advised that even something as simple as cutting down on edible oil by just 10 per cent can be a game-changer.
Move with Purpose
You don’t need a gym membership to be active. Walking briskly for 30 minutes a day, cycling to work, climbing stairs, or dancing to your favourite music can all boost your metabolism. The key is consistency over intensity.
Sleep and Stress Management
Poor sleep and chronic stress can disrupt hormones that control appetite and fat storage. Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep and incorporate stress-relieving habits such as meditation, yoga, or breathing exercises.
Hydrate Wisely
Water is your body’s best friend. Drinking enough water not only supports digestion and metabolism but also prevents overeating (often, thirst is mistaken for hunger).
Mindful Eating
Eat slowly and put your devices away while eating. Mindful eating helps recognise when you’re truly hungry — and when you’re full.
India is responding to the challenge with integrated initiatives like Fit India Movement, Eat Right India, and POSHAN Abhiyaan — each aiming to create awareness around nutrition, physical activity and holistic wellness that are a must for today.
True change begins at the individual level. Obesity may be a growing problem, but it is also a preventable one. By making health a daily habit — not a one-time resolution — we not only change our own lives but also set a precedent for those around us.So take that walk.
Choose the home-cooked meal. Sleep well. Because when it comes to health you take small steps that lead to lasting impact.
