While Sunny leone hopes society would be less discriminatory towards her, Ram Kapoor, her co-star in Kuch Kuch locha Hai, expects the Censor Board to be more mature in certifying movies. Karan Bhardwaj reports
You could be too quick to judge her but porn star-turned-actor Sunny leone, in her own little time in Bollywood, has done her best to shed her inhibitions and dive into a future where she is hailed as any other girl-next-door. Clad in a dirty pink sari, when she visited the Capital to promote her latest outing Kuch Kuch locha Hai (KKlH), she spoke her heart out against the criticism and discrimination that she is receiving from certain section of society.
“People discriminate against me because of my past. I’m not here to preach about my past. I look forward to have a better future. Every region has certain standards of public entertainment. I know I will never do anything here that could hurt public sentiments. I understand people’s reservations,” she said.
leone has been a part of movies and brands that thrive on sexual content. She said that though the audience has certain expectations from her, she, as an artiste, doesn’t see herself being stereotyped. “After KKlH, my forthcoming movies will be really different. They are not as glamorous as my previous movies. Mastizaade and One Night Stand will be revealing. They will definitely surprise you. Also, I am growing as an actor and a person,” she assured.
Accompanying her was her co-star in KKlH, Ram Kapoor. The actor who’s known for his intense characters on television, said that he looked out for fun to break his image, which is otherwise impossible on the idiot box. “Television channels have become so comfortable with my image that they don’t want to risk it anymore. They have a fixed formula and they come up with it every time. They are like... ‘okay, let’s put Ram as a protagonist husband and make a show’. And honestly, I don’t want to mess with them. But I try to have fun in movies. Which is why my characters are so entertaining,” he said adding that such movies allow him to explore a whole different side to him. “I always strive to grow as an artiste. I don’t want to be different but I want constant challenges in my performances. So I accept contrasting characters,” he said.
Kapoor is also miffed with the Censor Board for giving an ‘A’ certificate to his film. He argued that the board has judged KKlH on parameters that never existed. “It’s a family entertainer. It’s not a cheap sex comedy. When you watch the movie, you will realise that it’s not an adult film. I’m going to watch it with my whole family. I think there’s something terribly wrong with the Censor Board and it needs to be fixed. The film industry must unite and do something about it,” he said.
Kuch Kuch locha Hai is a comedy dare with Kapoor playing a rich Gujarati businessman and leone, a famous film star. “I could relate to my character for obvious reasons but stardom is not that dramatic as shown in the movie. I’m supposed to do a film where I am playing a Gujarati character. So I bump into this Gujarati family,” said leone, who is now fluent in Hindi.
