Dance India Dance Super Moms’ winner Mithu Chakraborty credits her win to her husband and two sons who learnt to manage home without her. She shares her inspirational journey with Divya Kaushik
Post-winning period is generally the time to raise a toast and have gala celebrations. But more than celebrations Mithu Chakraborty was concerned about the fracture of her younger son, who got injured while the family was travelling from Kolkata to Mumbai to witness the grand finale evening ofDID Super Moms. Kolkata-based Mithu emerged as the winner and celebrated till the wee hours after the shoot was over. “But I have been worried about my little one’s injury. He is just four. As a mother it was very difficult for me to leave them with their father for almost four months and be on the show. I think it has been only possible because of them and my husband that I managed to concentrate on improving my dancing skills. Since both my sons, aged 12 and four, are born I never left them to be on their own and this time since I did that I tried to make the separation worth it,” said the 34-year-old who competed with Shraddha Shah, Phulwa Khamkar, Cecile Rodrigues and Zoya Khan.
She is a non-dancer but she improved on the show and on the finale eve she performed on current Bollywood favourites. Mithu lost 12 kgs while on the show and that she dubs as the “one of the best thing” that happened to her. “Being overweight and a typical housewife I never imagined I will be able to reach this platform and perform here. Dancing in front of judges, who are known to be expert dancers, has given me immense confidence,” said Mithu, who walked away with the winner’s trophy and a cheque worth Rs 10 lakh. She learnt dance forms like latino, Hip-Hop, Bollywood and lavani. “I loved dancing since childhood but my parents were very strict and a career in dancing was never thought of. So I used to take classes for Bharatanatyam secretly. My parents were also very strict about my studies, they thought that dancing would distract me. I was married at the age of 17 and completed my graduation after my marriage. Dance remained like a dream and just for the sake of my love and passion for dance I started teaching dance in a small school at my home,” shared Mithu.
She was told time and again by people that she is very good at dancing and should take it seriously but she always laughed away such compliments. “I was overweight and have family to manage so I thought that teaching dance is the best I could do. I don’t remember who recommended me to go for DID Super Moms auditions but I was not serious when I went there with my husband. Everything happened so fast that when I look back I feel like I was living a dream,” she shared. Winning the competition has not only increased her confidence manifold but she has proved her love for dancing to all those who opposed to it earlier. “I want to teach dance and may be open up a bigger dance school that will help many other dancers like me. Also I hope my story would inspire many women who manage home to shed their inhibitions and work to make their dreams come true,” she ended.
