More than breakfast

With its smart menu and quaint interior, Big Fat Sandwich is a cute little place to grab a quick bite or meet a friend for coffee. By Vaibhav Ratra

Being “breakfast lovers”, the Big Fat Sandwich team has finally taken a giant leap and introduced what it calls a “good morning” menu at Hauz Khas in collaboration with Miam Patisserie and Blue Tokai.

In no time, this joint has made its name among the coffee shops of the city for its quaint interiors, food and desserts menu. It offers generous portion sizes and is praised for its freshness and high quality. The ambience is very laidback and casual. The music is perhaps a bit too loud for a place that looks likes the perfect spot for sharing lazy ramblings with a loved one.

From American grilled cheese sandwich to Texas massacre chicken burger, Big Fat Sandwich aims to deliver an explosion of flavours, be it in  terms of the juiciest meat or a filling vegetarian patty.

As we settle down, we notice the menu is quite exhaustive and the options require your complete and undivided attention. Apart from the sandwiches, there are fries, salads and an amazing pork belly.

Nutritious cereals melt in your mouth. Toasted croissants, open sandwiches and signature morning sandwiches are just the start. The massive section also includes eggs in every style, waffles and pancakes for the most wholesome, delicious start to your morning.

We are served “Jack in the bun” at the beginning of the meal made with slow-cooked pulled jackfruit, cream cheese, BFS hot sauce and lettuce. This burger is quickly gaining popularity as it delivers a mouthful  of flavours with innovative jack fruit filing.

Next up is the old-school grilled cheese sandwich, served in deli style packaging, a bacon-wrapped, gouda-lined lamb burger split between two sliders. We savour every bit of this sandwich, be it the juicy meat or the   chunky bacon. But if you need an extra kick, try it with plum ketchup, mustard mayo or sriracha mayo.

According to Anant Kataria, co-founder of Big Fat Sandwich, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always got. Food should not be consistent (it gets boring). It’s the consistency in experience that you should aim for.”

It’s the beverage section that catches our attention next. In a country of tea-lovers, coffee is still making inroads and Blue Tokai being one of the first artisanal coffee roasteries in India, doesn’t disappoint. After the slider, we are asked to have the highly recommended aeropress.

For desserts, we tuck into Belgian chocolate and salted caramel domes. These wonder balls are made of Belgian dark chocolate mousse with moist chocolate sponge and salted caramel which are as pleasing to the taste buds as they are to the eyes.

The Big Fat Sandwich does offer a wide range of sandwiches and burgers with a simple philosophy of producing the freshest baked breads, best cheese and home-made sauces. But it has a long way to go to please customers with its service.
