Khadi & Village Industries Commission (KVIC) has decided to install world’s largest charkha at Terminal 3 of Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi. Dimensions of the charkha are nine meters (27 feet) length five meters (15 feet) height.
KVIC chairman VK Saxena was pursuing this from GMR who have the statutory right on Terminal for the allotment of land and space. The company feels that the charkha is the symbol of independence of the country and 2016 being the centenary year of the arrival of the Mahatma Gandhi from South Africa.
Saxena says the display of charkha at airport will inculcate the feeling of Indianness and swadeshi amongst the domestic and international travelers of the country.
