Five designers who were in the industry for many years debuted on WIFW ramp. Karan Bhardwaj reports
Excitement, thrill, fear… emotions gripped the venue as five designers, who have been in the industry for several years, showcased their collections on ramp. Models kissing in air with peppy mood cheered up the audience and expectations rose high with designer Gautam Gupta. Though he kept his dresses minimal in terms of silhouettes, colours and drapes, what impressed us most was his cool prints. The evening gowns had at least one printed duppatta flowing in air lending it a breezy feel. Sitting in front row, Gautam’s mother and sister, broke down as the designer came to take a bow.
What followed this show was a confused state of fashion. Designer Niharika Pandey’s glittering skirts, tops, jackets and dresses were appalling to eyes. The models were looking as prep kids with stationery prints all over the clothes. Designer Poonam Dubey was perhaps the most-anticipated designer of the lot but her brother Manoj Bajpayee failed to attend the show. There were long skirts, Rajasthani tops high on embroidery and gota work. Clearly, it was not a prêt line. The only funky element we could spot was hint of blues in garments. Rinku Sobti didn’t experiment with colours. Monochrome dresses were her choice. On the other hand, Shantanu Singh exposed us to as many hues as he could. The opening dress had a splash of rainbow colours. A lot more thoughts were needed before presenting a collage of vague creations.
