Vivacity

Listen to the whispers from within

Rajyogi Brahma Kumar Nikunji

If human values are not restored now, a great moral disaster is inevitable, which will land the world into a series of economic, political, social and civilisational crises, says Rajyogi Brahmakumar Nikunj Ji

The West, where there are high percentages of literacy, per-capita income, standards of living, etc, is considered as a civilised society. But is it really civilised? Looking at the increasing number of cases of rape, murder, child sexual abuse, and robbery, can we really call it that?

A country, where the government manufactures weapons for mass killing, people alter their level of consciousness by using alcohol or intoxicating drugs, where there are illicit children, broken homes, divorced spouses and everyone is running after money, sex and sensuous entertainments, can we call such a society civil? Deforestation of jungles, building sky-scrappers, using knife and fork to eat, and handling sophisticated gadgets — does this all determine a society’s civilised status? We can say that there are hospitals, courts, police stations, fire brigades, schemes for social welfare and child care, etc, but are they really personally civilised as a society? Doesn’t the existence of more police and courts indicate how there is a lot of crime and litigation because people have no integrity or honesty. Else, why do we need more and more police, law courts, lawyers, the jurisdiction and jails?

Similarly, doesn’t the existence of a very large number of doctors, dispensing chemists and hospitals, indicate that a lot many people are suffering from various diseases? Further, why are they suffering from so many psychosomatic diseases, which are caused by, or are linked to, mental stress, tension, worry, fear, fatigue, etc? Doesn’t that mean that there are no happy relations, there is no sense of belonging or feeling of love and everyone is selfish? Doesn’t all this mean that there is a serious violation of moral, social, human or spiritual values?

We need to understand that the real problem, underlying all problems, whether these be labelled as economic, social, political, communal or by whatever other name, is man. Man who violates human values, cares only for himself and is after fulfillment of his own ambitions, irrespective of what happens to others, they are always harmful for the society’s peaceful functioning. We should, therefore, realise that life today has become so much linked and interdependent in a complicated way, that one’s capacity to do wrong or bad has multiplied manifold.

In view of this, we must lay proper emphasis on observance of values, else we will be inviting our own doom in the form of environmental pollution, nuclear weapons, high growth rate of population, global warming, etc. Our present-day society is marching towards barbarity, worse than we could have even conceived a century ago. Man’s inner conscience has become more vulgar and beasty than it ever was and he has fallen further into quagmire of vices. The worst thing is that man has lost his conscience, moral voice, and the whispers of silence from within. Even at this stage, if values are not restored, then a great moral disaster is inevitable, which will land the world into a series of economic, political, social and civilisational crises and, eventually, all our wonderful global progresses will mix into the dust! Let us, therefore, understand what a “civilised society” actually means and how much we need to let each one of us individually inculcate the values in us if we want to create a better world to live in.
