In her Hindi remake of KD, director Madhumita crafts a portrait of a fading mind and a blossoming friendship, writes Abhi Singhal
Film Kaalidhar Laapata, streaming now on Zee5, is a heartfelt Hindi remake of director Madhumita’s acclaimed Tamil feature KD (Karuppu Durai). Abhishek Bachchan delivers one of his most nuanced performances in recent years, stepping far outside his usual screen persona to portray Kaalidhar, a middle aged man struggling with dementia. Under Madhumita’s experienced direction, he embodies vulnerability and quiet strength, grounding the character in a touching realism.
The film opens slowly — its first twenty minutes may feel sedate — but it soon finds rhythm in the growing companionship between Kaalidhar and Ballu, an orphaned eight year old brought to life by the remarkable Daivik Baghela. His portrayal is natural, spontaneous and utterly charming, adding emotional ballast to the story. Together, the pair embarks on a heart warming road trip through small town India, ticking off items from Kaalidhar’s bucket list: riding a bike, wearing a suit, reuniting with a past love. It’s a simple narrative arc, but one imbued with purpose and warmth.
The cinematography, inspired by Madhya Pradesh’s textured locales, enhances this simplicity. Soft, natural lighting and lived in settings — temples, marketplaces, rustic eateries — lend authenticity to the visual palette. Amit Trivedi’s soundtrack complements the tone with gentle, uplifting melodies, ensuring the film never slips into melodrama.
Strengths lie in the central performances and the depiction of intergenerational friendship. However, the screenplay has moments of inconsistency. Some evaluators describe it as meandering or timid in fully exploring its emotional depths. Key dramatic beats — such as the climax or Kaalidhar’s memory challenges — occasionally feel underdeveloped or glossed over. Supporting characters, like Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub’s compassionate Subodh and Nimrat Kaur’s brief appearance as Kaalidhar’s former love, add value but remain slightly underwritten.
In sum, Kaalidhar Laapata is a quietly compelling fare: moving, compassionate and anchored by two exceptional lead performances. While it occasionally edges towards predictability, its core message — that companionship and simple acts of kindness can uplift even the most forgotten souls — resonates long after watching.
If you’re in search of an earnest, low key drama with emotional sincerity, this film is a one time watch worth savouring.
