Hint of colour

Post his show, Samant Chauhan said he is designing for two of Tigmanshu Dhulia’s films. He is also planning to launch a merchandise with Dhulia’s popular dialogues

Samant Chauhan had in store the first surprise for the second day of the WIFW spring/summer fashion week. The designer finally moved away from the subtle tones and introduced a hint of colour in his collection. Though that hint of colour, too, was meagre, but it marked the beginning of some sorts. The designer agreed, “This has been a huge change in my line this time. I was often asked by my clients why I don’t work with colours. I thought that with this line I may introduce some of that.”

The collection that was titled Dream was pretty European when it comes to cuts and embroidery motifs. The designer told us that for embroidery patterns and motifs he was inspired by a 16th century European artist who was known for his wall art. The designer, who works for the cause of his native Bhagalpur’s master weavers, again showcased a line that promoted the age-old craft technique.

He created simple yet classy designs by using Bhagalpur silk fabric and the garments were an elegant representation of style and glamour. From long dresses, tunics, skirts, trouser to hand woven saris, there was everything for everyone. One of the high points of the show was the use of hues, including cherry red, blue, light pink, yellow and cream.

While chatting with us post his show, the designer revealed that he is making his Bollywood debut as a designer with Tigmanshu Dhulia’s forthcoming film Yaara. It is an official remake of the 2011 French film les lyonnais. “The movie moves in different periods and it was fun working on the costumes. It was a lot of research as Tigmanshu is very particular about the look of each character in the movie. For us, the 70s look was not about broad and big collars. We have looked beyond the obvious and created something that goes with the script. I enjoyed the process,” he said. But he shared that as a designer he is not willing to take too many Bollywood projects. “After this, I will also be working on Dhulia’s Milan Talkies,” he said. The designer will soon be working on a merchandise with Dhulia’s famous dialogues. “He is a superb writer and most of his dialogues are very famous, so I will be coming up with T-shirts, mugs and other cool stuff with his popular dialogues. It will be available for sale online,” he said.
