American singer Kaya Jones spoke to Iknoor Kaur about her ‘musical rebirth' with her new album

After three failed attempts and several cancellations, Kaya Jones finally performed in India recently at the Hard Rock Café. However, the songstress’ tour didn’t begin as she expected it to. As Kaya got onto the stage, she had a massive fall that created quite a stir among the enthusiastic crowd. However, she said it helped her perform better. “I’ve never fallen during a show, so when I fell I just had to prove something. So I gave in everything I had and people were receptive and happy,” she told us.

Kaya is a huge Bollywood fan and she also improvised one of her songs. “I watched a lot of Bollywood movies as a kid because in Canada there is a special channel dedicated to Bollywood. So when I sang Hollywood Doll, I changed it to Bollywood Doll because I’ve fallen in love with Bollywood,” she shared.

The singer who was earlier a part of pop-girl band The Pussycat Dolls sang songs that were from her new solo album. “I mainly focussed on my new album Rise of the Phoenix which is yet to come out. The whole theme of this album is killing my former Pussycat Doll self. It is my rebirth while shredding old skin,” she explained.

According to Kaya, her stint with Pussycat band is a matter of past. She said, “It was a great thing to be a part of, but I hope people can appreciate who I am now. A lot of my fans are actually so young that they don’t even know The Pussycat Dolls. As for me, I’m all about living in the present so I’m not looking back.”

Being her first visit to India, Kaya fell in love with the food and the people. She shared, “My mother is Jamaican, so the food I’ve always eaten has been curried. Thus, I love everything curried here. I also love the Indian women. They are gorgeous, in fact the most beautiful women in the world.”

As for Indian music, Kaya is keen on collaborating with a few Bollywood artists. “I haven’t had a chance to listen to much Indian radio, but I have been meeting with different Bollywood producers and talking about doing something with Bollywood artistes. A few ideas have been bounced off me and I’m definitely interested,” she concluded.
