Significance of the day

In 1957, to check the advance of Chinese troops in order to consolidate their hold on the road through A K Sai Chin Mountains, one coy of 3rd Bn, CRPF was assigned the task of guarding the Indo-Tibetan border. On October 21, a CRPF patrol of 21 men led by Dy SP Karan Singh, came under surprise attack by the Chinese armed with automatic weapons.

In the gun battle, though the CRPF party was outnumbered it gave a bold account of itself in the face of overwhelming odds and lost ten brave jawans. Their martyrdom on this day is, therefore, remembered as “Police Commemoration Day”.
