Boys do dance

Pioneer

Shaan is all set to break his mould and surprise fans with his moves. The singer talks about challenging himself and discovering new skills

Dance in your life, routine, diversion or skill development….

It is definitely not a routine yet. I am still rehearsing hard and making my body used to jumping around and do other kind of steps. To me dance and this competition is a part of skill development. This is like a personal quest, discovering something new within me. Everything in my life was pretty much the same, so I thought why not give a chance to myself and be a part of this show to learn something new.

Early memories of dance:

Not really, we have all been singers in the family. As kids me and my sister always used to sit and sing because we thought that while singing someone might ask us to dance as well, so we chose this safe strategy to sit and sing. Even in school I was always up for singing and never volunteered for dance, rather no one thought I would be ideal to dance. I always believed that boys don’t dance. Coincidentally it was only about a month ago that my wife was encouraging kids to participate in competitions and dance and even then I told her that they can do other things, but boys don’t dance. I have proved myself wrong.

Most of the dancers on the show are non-dancers…

It is good to see the transformation and watch the non-dancers learning and opening up on such a huge platform. It is encouraging for others too.

How do you think the show will help you in your overall packaging as an artisteIJ

As singers we have to perform and do concerts, I think dance helps you express yourself better on stage. There are many changes that you will find in yourself once you get into dancing routine. It is a great exercise and gives you confidence. The channel was after me for some time and I did think a lot before opting for this. It is like challenging myself at a different level and it has been an enjoyable experience so far. Except a first few days when I could not figure out how to do things.

Your favourite dance form…

I would not know the names of the dance forms but I enjoy watching contemporary. Before this show I never paid attention to what kind of dance it was, I just watched it like any other viewer.

Your strength and weakness as a dancer:

Being a singer I understand the rhythms and I can match the movements to the rhythm easily. I don’t take too long to understand the steps. But as I am new to this entire process of learning my difficulty is to maintain balance while I am dancing and to retain the steps. I keep forgetting how I am supposed to move my hand while I am doing a certain steps. Sometimes I would move the leg right and forget that I had to make my hands also move with that.

Any dance sequence that you particularly remember:

I watched Ranbir performing during one of the award functions. I don’t say that he is the best dancer, I am sure we have many great dancers in our industry like Hrithik Roshan, but why I can recall Ranbir’s performance is because there was a certain energy that he maintained throughout his performance.

What have you picked up from your choreographer, as a person and as an artistIJ

She is a fantastic dancer and a trainer. She knows how to train a non-dancer like me, step by step. The credit goes to her that now I have started grasping steps. She is helping me breaking the mould.
