Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) recently conducted 31st Plenary Meeting and Group Meetings of ISO/TC 113, Hydrometry and its subcommittees and it’s Working Groups). Delegates from USA, UK, Japan, South Korea, Netherlands, World Metrological Organisation (WMO) and India participated in the meeting.
Technical Committee ISO/TC 113 of International Organisation of Standardisation deals with standardisation of methods, procedures, instruments and equipments relating to techniques for hydrometric determination of water level, velocity, discharge and sediment transport in open channels, precipitation and evapotranspiration, availability and movement of ground water.
ISO TC 113 has published 66 standards and 17 standards are under development. There were 19 participating members (including India) and 16 observing members in ISO TC 113. India (Bureau of Indian standards) holds the Secretariat of IS TC 113 and two Sub-Committees i.e. Velocity Area Methods SC 1 and Sediment Transport, SC 6.
During the meeting many important subjects were discussed such as Hydrometric uncertainty, measurement of rainfall intensity, stream gauging, various velocity area methods for hydrometric measurements, structures for flow measurements, instruments equipments and data management techniques in hydrometry and sediment transport. Delegates also visited Poiya Ghat, Agra where Central Water Commission has a hydrological observation site. Delegates were apprised of river measurement techniques followed by Central Water Commission.
A presentation was also made during the site visit wherein testing of in-situ water quality parameters and observation of water level and discharge by Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler would be demonstrated to the delegates.
