Artist Kalicharan Gupta has depicted our changing lifestyle in his showcase, Myths of Metropolis
Abstract shapes drawn from the bold and vibrant colours, with textures playing a major role in bringing life to each painting. The above description is the collection of art work made by the artist Kalicharan Gupta.
His exhibition titled Myths Of Metropolis reflects the way of life in the urban area, the gradual growth in the population has led to change in the lifestyle of people. Gupta beautifully has depicted it through his story. His collection represents the abstractions that reflect the microcosm of experiences and his view towards the society. It is the overview of life of a person in a metro city.
What or whom has been your inspirationIJ
The society and my soul, are my inspiration. The difficulties that we are facing in our life is not limited to our country but in fact, the world is facing the same problems.
Do you follow any particular style in your paintingsIJ
The latest style is dropping. I never used any instruments to draw any link, vertical, horizontal, diagonally et al. Sometimes, I draw the colour on canvas with the help of brush and with hand, too. My style is completely my own and you can’t say it is copied. I am doing abstract work since 2003 and it took me three years to do it.
Is there any particular story that you tried to depict through your collectionIJ
Yes, there is a big and most important problem of the society of the world I took up as a challenge — people are coming far from their villages and using open spaces to settle in the metropolitan cities. They make their livelihood here in the cities and never go back. Because of this, open spaces are vanishing day by day and there is no space to breathe.
What does Myths of Metropolis representIJ
Myth of Metropolisshows negative and positive things of metropolitan cities.
How much time did you take to complete your whole collectionIJ
You know, before this I had my solo shows in 2007 and 2011 in visual art gallery of India Habitat Center and now in 2015 it means after four years of gap I am able to do such shows. So,if you consider the time gap then it is not encouraging. We, artists can do much more in a gap of four years. Booking a gallery is not easy as it seems. Galleries are less in numbers which can be hired and booked and artist are in huge numbers in India but less if we compare with any asian or European city.
What is the next project that you are working onIJ
This project will continue for another couple of years. It will take me more time to complete my big drawings in a new form for metropolitan. Recently, I am little busy with my projection the drawings of Hanji Korea paper. It will take me some time to complete it.
