August Calls You Away

Team Viva

The Independence Day holiday on 15 August 2025, fortuitously falling on a Friday, presents an opportune moment to indulge in a well-timed three-day sojourn. Far from the cacophony of urban life, this extended weekend invites travellers to seek out landscapes that rejuvenate the senses and enrich the spirit.

For those enchanted by the allure of rain-drenched vistas, Coorg and Wayanad in Karnataka offer expanses of lush plantations, veiled waterfalls, and monsoon-washed trails. Should one favour the quietude of the hills, the mist-clad retreats of Lansdowne in Uttarakhand or Saputara in Gujarat provide understated charm without the throng of conventional tourist circuits.

The monsoon lends a brooding elegance to coastal escapes as well —  Gokarna and Varkala, with their cliff-fringed shores and rhythmic surf, offer contemplative solitude and spiritual calm. Meanwhile, the historic town of Mandu, swathed in rain and ruin, exudes an otherworldly romance unmatched by better-known destinations.

For the culturally inclined, Orchha and Shekhawati are repositories of palatial architecture and forgotten frescoes. Wildlife reserves such as Kabini and Tadoba, enveloped in monsoon mist, offer atmospheric safaris and glimpses of elusive species, often at attractively reduced off-season tariffs.

For those disinclined to venture far, countryside escapes within a few hours’ reach — vineyards near Nashik, artisanal stays around Shantiniketan, or sustainable farm retreats near Delhi NCR — promise both comfort and character.

With domestic travel witnessing a discernible resurgence, early reservations and flexible planning are prudent. Embrace the rain, relinquish the rush, and allow the journey to unfold at its own pace.

This 15th August, observe freedom not solely as a national ideal, but as a personal experience — lived slowly, travelled mindfully, and returned from, transformed.
