Jackets and dresses made from denims, corduroy and velvet can be added to the wardrobe this season

It is the season when you take a break from voiles, plus all the regular cotton fabric you kept aside. As per the trend forecast by Cotton Council International (CCI), denims and cotton velvets can also be part of your wardrobe for the summer. “There is a misconception that light-weight cotton, velvets and denims and velvet are not suited for summer. But there are lighter versions that suit this weather. You must have noticed summer collections of high-end brands feature denim shirts and jackets. The denim used is composed of 100 per cent cotton and is as light and cool as other fabrics. Stretchable denim comes with two per cent lycra, and is suitable for summer,” informed Angela Toppo, brand consultant of CCI. Maybe this is the reason that many designers have dresses and jackets in their summer collections.

Corduroy is another fabric that can be made of cotton. It’s called corduroy cotton and has been a hit on runways too. Velvet cotton is for evening dresses. “Cotton is mostly considered day fabric. For evening parties or dinners, people stay away from cotton. But cotton velvet, which is light and shimmery is a good option. Designer Rina Dhaka used lots of it in her  collection,” shared Angela.

Another fabric called seersucker, is thin and puckered, commonly striped or chequed and has been used by fashion designers across the country, extensively for their summer creations. Seersucker is woven in such a way, that its threads bunch together, giving the fabric a wrinkled look.

There are lot of experiments happening on the fabric too. “For example, designer Yogesh Chowdhary, who showcased recently at the lakme Fashion Week, used reflective foil technique on cotton. It makes a layer which resembles mirror on cotton,” said Angela.

Cotton jersey is another popular fabric. “Cowls that you see on gowns and maxi dresses, can only be perfectly done in cotton jersey material. Cut-out trends are also a huge hit because they make the look flowy and structured. Camouflage prints are hot this season. Camouflage print cotton canvas bags are an ideal accessory if you want to add depth to the overall look,” she said.

Spring summer is high on birds and florals in bright hues like canary yellow or kingfisher blue on cotton. “Crop tops are yet another trend that has stylishly trickled down from last summer. Beat the summer heat with some cotton jersey for a cool casual look. Crotchet in cotton is also picking up. It’s best in cotton, or the knots don’t last,” ended Angela.
