Anish Kapoor’s latest work is under the scanner for depicting the ‘queen’s vagina’
The Indian born British sculptor, Anish Kapoor, has become the centre of controversy yet again by installing a huge artwork, and very cheekily calling it a “queen’s vagina”. The work is titled Dirty Corner which is placed in the stately grounds of the Palace of Versailles. This 60 m (200 ft) long, 10 m (33 ft) high steel-and-rock abstract sculpture, featuring a funnel in the form of an orifice, is set up in the garden aimed directly at the royal chateau, which attracts millions of tourists every year.
The sculptor was heard describing it as “blatantly sexual” and “regal” at the same time. Though he has mentioned that it is the “queen’s vagina who is taking power,” to a well-known French newspaper, he has not mentioned which particular queen he is referring to.
The artist created further trouble by claiming that though he mentioned the word vagina to describe his sculpture, he never made a reference to a queen’s vagina.
The 61-year-old, ambitious sculptor has another scandalous sculpture to his credit that is displayed inside the palace itself. It shows red wax being fired at white walls through a canon representing phallus and the ejaculation of blood. Many organisations came running to speak in the artist’s defense saying that only a “fascist” circle of commentators would be against the sculpture.
