‘Deepika defended herself pretty well’

Soha Ali Khan has come out in support of Deepika Padukone who is currently miffed with a leading daily over ‘objectification of women'. Soha said, “I don't know what happened I haven't seen the original image. Paparazzi is a part and parcel of being an actor. But I think when it comes to reputation media should be sensitive about it. I think she defended herself very well and I don't think she needs anyone else to stand by her. Whatever statements she gave proves that she is perfectly capable of supporting herself.” Khan next will be seen in Chaarfutiya Chhokare, a film on child trafficking. “A lot has been said about the issue of child trafficking. We wanted to give an insight into the issue through our film,” she said.

India tops the chart in showing attractive women in its movies and as much as 35 per cent of these female characters are shown with some nudity, finds a first-ever UN sponsored global study of female characters in popular films across the world.

The study, commissioned by the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, with support from UN Women and The Rockefeller Foundation, reveals deep-seated discrimination, pervasive stereotyping, sexualisation of women and their under-representation in powerful roles by the international film industry.

Indian films, the study finds, have a significantly higher prevalence of sexualisation of female characters and the movies score low in depicting women in significant speaking roles and as engineers and scientists.

While women represent nearly half of the world's population, less than one third of all speaking characters in films are female and UK-US collaborations and Indian films are at the bottom of the pack.

‘I event was the best in my life’

Hollywood action star Arnold Schwarzenegger has thanked producer Aascar Ravichandran for his hospitality and making his Chennai visit “incredibly successful”. He also praised the filmmaker's forthcoming Tamil romantic-thriller as a “dynamic film”. He visited Chennai earlier this month for the audio launch of Vikram-starrer. “Thank you for everything you did to make my visit to Chennai such an incredible success,” the star of The Terminator franchise wrote in his letter to Ravichandran. “From the incredible hotel to the delicious food, the visit was perfect. But the icing on the cake was the event. I have been to the Oscars, and the Golden Globes, and every event you can imagine. let me tell you something — they could all learn from how you stage a production,” he wrote. “The whole event flowed perfectly, and the energy there could have powered all of India. The bodybuilders were a fantastic touch and made everything organic,” he said.
