Post divorce problems
It’s normal for people to experience trouble sleeping after a divorce, but if sleep problems last too long, they can lead to potentially harmful increases in blood pressure, a new study finds. The research suggests that poor sleep quality might be one of the reasons divorce is linked to negative health effects. “Sleep problems that persist for an extended period after divorce may mean that people are potentially becoming depressed, that they’re struggling with getting their life going again, and it is these people that are particularly susceptible to health problems,”said David Sbarra, UA associate professor of psychology.
Cocktails lead to binge drinking
Public health concerns continue to grow concerning the combining of alcohol with energy drinks (A+ED). New findings indicate that combining A+ED increased the urge to drink alcohol relative to drinking alcohol alone. Study participants who drank A+ED also had significantly higher ratings on liking the cocktail, and wanting to drink more of it, than the alcohol-only condition. A number of cross-sectional studies show that young adults who mix alcohol with energy drinks (A+ED) have higher levels of alcohol consumption than their peers who don’t mix energy drinks with alcohol.
Mind vs BodyIJ philosophical dualism
Many people, whether they know it or not, are philosophical dualists. That is, they believe that the brain and the mind are two separate entities. Despite the fact dualist beliefs are found in virtually all human cultures, we know surprisingly little about how these beliefs influence thought and behavior in everyday life. A new research article suggests that espousing a dualist philosophy can have important real-life consequences. Researchers Matthias Forstmann, Pascal Burgmer, and Thomas Mussweiler of the University of Cologne, Germany, found that people primed with dualist beliefs had more reckless attitudes toward health and exercise, and also preferred (and ate) a less healthy diet than those who were primed with physicalist beliefs.
Eye movement to suggest love
A new study suggests that difference between love and lust might be in the eyes. Specifically, where your date looks at you could indicate whether love or lust is in the cards. Eye patterns concentrate on a stranger’s face if the viewer sees that person as a potential partner in romantic love but the viewer gazes more at the other person’s body if he or she is feeling sexual desire. “These patterns provide clues regarding how automatic processes may differentiate feelings of love from feelings of desire towards strangers,” said Stephanie Cacioppo, director of the UChicago High-Performance Electrical Neuro Imaging laboratory.
Syndrome follows trauma
Many patients continue to suffer several months after their direct injuries from an accident have healed. They may have headaches, uncontrollable fear or maladies of various kinds, vision problems, balancing problems or be irritable. When the symptoms occur simultaneously in a single context, they constitute what is called a syndrome. A research team has studied the subsequent development of 1,300 people who were admitted to hospital for trauma. The researchers demonstrate that it is possible to identify people who will develop post-traumatic stress disorder, which generally occurs when the individual’s life was put in danger.
