Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a two-day visit to Japan on Saturday, August 30, 2025, marking a significant step forward in the India-Japan strategic partnership. The trip resulted in three major takeaways: deeper cooperation in high-speed rail infrastructure, a new collaboration in space exploration and a massive investment commitment from Tokyo. These developments are seen as pivotal in strengthening bilateral ties between the two countries in a changing global landscape.

One of the most symbolic moments of the visit came when Prime Minister Modi and his Japanese counterpart, Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, boarded the famous Shinkansen bullet train in the city of Sendai. The ride was more than a gesture of friendship — it underscored Japan’s involvement in India’s upcoming high-speed rail project between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. During the journey, the PM met Indian train drivers who are currently undergoing training in Japan for operating the bullet train once it becomes operational in India. This project, being developed with Japanese technology and assistance, is a flagship example of the technological cooperation between the two nations.

Another major highlight of the visit was the formal announcement of a joint lunar mission between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). The mission, dubbed Chandrayaan-5, will mark a new era in Indo-Japanese collaboration in space. According to both leaders, the mission will focus on advanced lunar exploration and scientific research, building upon the previous successes of India’s Chandrayaan programme and Japan’s deep space initiatives.

Adding to the growing technological cooperation, India and Japan are now focusing on strengthening ties in the semiconductor sector.

On August 30, Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Ishiba visited Sendai in Miyagi Prefecture, where they toured the facilities of Tokyo Electron Miyagi Ltd (TEL Miyagi), a leading player in Japan’s advanced semiconductor manufacturing industry. During the visit, Modi received a detailed briefing on TEL’s role in the global semiconductor value chain. The tour highlighted the company’s cutting-edge manufacturing capabilities and its ongoing and planned collaborations with India. Both leaders gained a first-hand perspective on the strategic potential for future cooperation in semiconductor fabrication, testing, and supply chain integration areas vital for both nations in ensuring technological self-reliance.

Economically, the visit saw one of the largest ever pledges of Japanese investment into India. A joint statement released after summit talks confirmed that Japan will invest 10 trillion yen-approximately $68 billion-into India over the next decade. This investment will span key sectors such as semiconductors, rare earth minerals, digital infrastructure, and clean energy. The initiative aims to enhance India’s industrial capabilities while also securing critical supply chains.

In a social media post, PM Modi called the visit “productive” and thanked the Japanese people and government for their warm hospitality. He emphasized that the outcomes of this visit will open a “new and golden chapter” in India-Japan relations.

With strategic cooperation expanding across transport, space, and technology, the visit underscored a shared commitment to global stability, innovation, and economic growth.
