Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy said that the state government has implemented strict measures against drug and ganja (marijuana) use, as they have become some of the most serious challenges facing society and it is everyone's responsibility to ensure that youngsters do not fall prey to drug abuse. He appreciated Telangana's anti-drug agency, EAGLE Force, and the DGP for their efforts in controlling drug-related activities in the state.
Speaking at the Police Commemoration Day event at Goshamahal Stadium in Hyderabad on Wednesday, the Chief Minister said the state government was taking measures to strengthen the Police Department to tackle emerging crimes and challenges, including cybercrime, online fraud, drug trafficking and food adulteration.
On the occasion, the Chief Minister announced that all vacancies in the Police Department would be filled in phases by 2028 to ensure that there is no shortage of personnel in the state. “We have approved the recruitment of another 5,000 personnel in the Police Department in 2026,” he said.
Revanth Reddy said that 112 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) had been recruited, an unprecedented number even during the period of undivided Andhra Pradesh. He said that nearly 16,000 constables and Sub-Inspectors (SIs) had been recruited by October 2025.
He also said Telangana had taken a unique initiative by appointing transgender persons as traffic assistants, enhancing their dignity and self-respect.
The Chief Minister explained that the government had substantially increased ex gratia compensation for police personnel who lose their lives in the line of duty.
"The increase in ex gratia is not merely financial assistance. It is a mark of respect shown by the government to the families of police martyrs. Providing greater financial security, recognising their sacrifices and supporting their families are among the government's highest priorities," he said.
The government had also decided to provide Rs 16 lakh from the Security and Welfare fund and another Rs 8 lakh from the welfare fund, he said.
The Chief Minister also directed the DGP to increase ex gratia for Home Guards from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. “Priority should also be given to medical examinations for Home Guards. Irrespective of rank, the government recognises everyone's hard work," he said.
Addressing the families of police martyrs, the Revanth Reddy said, "I want to say something specifically to the families of police martyrs. No one can bring back the person you have lost. No one can completely fill the void left in your families. But you are not alone in your grief. The Telangana government stands with you. The Police Department stands with you. Telangana society stands with you."
He also addressed police officers and personnel serving in the department.
"I want to tell every officer and every member of the police force that your discipline is your strength, your honesty is your honour, and the confidence you instil in the public is your greatest recognition. Stand firmly for the safety of the people. This government will stand by you for your welfare and the future of your families," he said.
The Chief Minister said that honouring martyrs meant not only paying tributes but also respecting their sacrifices and standing by their families.
Revanth Reddy stressed the importance of implementing friendly policing. "The real essence lies in implementing friendly policing. Police personnel should behave in a friendly manner with ordinary citizens. At the same time, they should deal strictly with criminals," he said.
