Hyderabad: Police have uncovered a suspected organised fertility-related operation allegedly being run from a women's hostel in Prakash Nagar, Begumpet, and questioned around 10 women following a midnight raid at Ami Neeta Girls Hostel on Thursday.
The operation was launched after police received information about suspected illegal activities at the premises. Preliminary investigations suggested that women from different States were allegedly brought to the hostel for fertility-related procedures, with the possibility of links to fertility centres.
Police suspect that the operation may have been running for nearly a year. Investigators are examining the role of the hostel operators, intermediaries and possible links with fertility centres. The probe has also widened following suspicions that sperm samples may have been collected from some men at the premises.
However, Begumpet Inspector P. Saidulu told The Pioneer that nothing had been established so far and that the allegations would have to be verified through medical findings and official reports.
"Nothing has been established so far. Doctors have to certify the findings, and the DHMO officials have to submit their reports. Only then will it be clear whether any such procedures took place. So far, no IVF scans have been conducted and it is not known whether the women have undergone ovulation. Nothing further is known at this stage. The women are staying at the hostel and belong to different States," Saidulu said.
According to the police, around 10 women found at the hostel belong to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha. Investigators are seeking to establish how they came to stay at the premises, whether they were aware of the alleged activities and whether intermediaries were involved in bringing them there.
Police are also examining the evidence collected during the raid and the possible involvement of people managing the hostel.
The medical findings and the report from the District Health and Medical Officer (DHMO) are expected to establish whether any procedures took place. The investigation is continuing.
