HYDERABAD: Hyderabad Traffic Police are weighing a one-way traffic arrangement around the busy Lakdikapul stretch, after a similar system was introduced near KBR Park, to ease congestion on the corridor.
Police Commissioner V.C. Sajjanar inspected the proposed routes on Friday with D. Joel Davis, Joint Commissioner for Traffic, and other senior officers looking at how vehicles move and the condition of roads at Dwarka Hotel, HDFC junction, the old Saifabad police station, Ravindra Bharati, Iqbal Minar and the Old Control Room.
The proposal covers the stretch from Ravindra Bharathi junction to the Lakdikapul bus stop and would hit traffic moving towards Mehdipatnam, Khairatabad and Lakdikapul.
Vehicles going from the Old Police Control Room towards Secunderabad through Ravindra Bharati and Iqbal Minar would no longer be allowed to continue straight from Ravindra Bharati, and would instead be sent past HDFC Bank and the old Saifabad police station, then along Iqbal Minar to the Secretariat junction.
Vehicles approaching the Old Control Room from Nirankari junction would be stopped from going straight to HDFC junction. They would be turned at the old Saifabad police station, sent along Iqbal Minar and then told to swing right past Ravindra Bharati to reach the Old Control Room.
A third change concerns traffic from the Secretariat junction and the Telangana Talli flyover heading towards the old Saifabad police station. Such vehicles would travel along Iqbal Minar up to Ravindra Bharati, turn back at the Old Control Room, then continue past Assembly Gate No. 3 and Ravindra Bharati and on past HDFC Bank to the police station.
Sajjanar said his force would meet the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, the Water Board, the Electricity Department and other stakeholders before taking a final call, and that any approved system would first run on a trial basis so commuters are not put to hardship.
A senior police official said, "Broadly, we arrived at a route but will implement it after taking approval from the government."
The commissioner said police were also studying whether one-way restrictions could work at other congested junctions under the city commissionerate, and that traffic experts were being consulted.
He asked residents to cooperate for better traffic management.
