Hyderabad: A habitual inter-State ganja peddler, allegedly involved in five drug-peddling cases across three States, has been detained under the Preventive Detention (PD) Act by Cyberabad Police Commissioner Dr M Ramesh to prevent him from continuing his illegal activities.

According to the police, Sachin Gangaram Maruti Chavan, a native of Solapur district in Maharashtra, was involved in five drug-peddling cases between 2020 and 2026. Of these, three cases were registered in Telangana and one each in Maharashtra and Karnataka.

Police said Chavan procured large quantities of ganja from Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, transported them to various locations and supplied the contraband to his associates and consumers at exorbitant prices for illegal monetary gains.

He had also developed a network of associates involved in the procurement, transportation and distribution of ganja across Telangana and other States, including areas under the Cyberabad Police Commissionerate, police added.

Citing his repeated involvement in drug-peddling offences and his inter-State network, which posed a serious threat to public health and public order, the Commissioner invoked the PD Act against him and ordered his preventive detention. Chavan was subsequently lodged in Central Prison, Cherlapalli, through Patancheru Police Station.
