Hyderabad: The Civil Supplies Department registered cases against rice traders at 10 establishments in Hyderabad district for various violations, including operating without trade licences, short weighing and non-compliance with Legal Metrology regulations.

Chief Rationing Officers conducted special inspections on Thursday, The inspections covered rice trading establishments in the Amberpet, Khairatabad, Secunderabad, Mehdipatnam and Nampally circles.

Three establishments were found operating without the required trade licences, while two were found selling rice in underweight bags. At one establishment, a 26-kg bag of Gajraj brand rice contained only 24.960 kg, resulting in a shortage of 1.040 kg per bag. Short weighing was also detected in 26-kg rice bags at another establishment.

Officials also detected violations including the use of unverified weighing machines, machines whose verification validity had expired and failure to use weighing machines for commercial transactions.

Some rice bags were also found to be missing the manufacturer's name and other mandatory details. Inspections further revealed deficiencies related to GST registration and FSSAI licences at some establishments.

The department said the inspections aimed to ensure that consumers receive the correct quantity of rice, prevent fraud through short weighing and promote transparent business practices.

The Civil Supplies Department advised rice traders to maintain the required licences and registrations, use only verified weighing machines, ensure correct weights in rice bags and print all prescribed details on the packaging. It warned that strict legal action would be taken against those violating the rules.
