A jilted lover from Uttrakhand came to Namsai in Arunachal Pradesh, travelling over 2,500 kms seeking his ‘love’ but only to get killed by locals after he hacked the girl to death for her refusal to return with him.

Police in Namsai district of Arunachal Pradesh said the gory incident took place on Thursday evening after the jilted lover, Rajib Nagarkati—who hails from Uttrakhand—arrived at Namsai to take back his love Bijita Devi, who had deserted him about a year back before returning to her father’s house in Namsai. The boy also attacked the mother of the girl, injuring her seriously.

“It seems the girl, a beautician by training, met Rajib during a job fair in Bangalore in 2014 and they fell in love. Both soon moved to New Delhi and started living together. However, the relation did not last long and the girl moved back to her father’s house in Namsai last year,” said a senior police officer in Namsai while quoting family members of the girl.

“On Thursday, Rajib arrived at the girl’s house in Namsai and asked the girl’s father that the girl be allowed to return to New Delhi with him. The girl and her father refused to this leading to a heated arguments at which Rajib took out a machete and hacked the girl instantly. When her mother tried to intervene, Rajib attacked and injured her too,” said police.

Seeing the turn of events, the neighbours who gathered around the house, caught hold of Rajib who tried to escape. The locals later tied him up with a tree and lynched him to death, said police. While the girl succumbs to her injuries on the spot, her mother had been shifted to the Assam Medical College and Hospital at Dibrugarh district in Assam, police added.

“We have been in touch with our counterparts in Uttrakhand. They (Uttrakhand police) told us that the boy is survived by his mother only. The body was kept in the morgue in Dibrugarh and we are waiting to hand it over to the keen of the family, who arrives here,” said the police.

“We are told that Rajib and Bijita were only living together and they were not married. Bijita also told her parents that she was physically and mentally abused by Rajib when they were together and that is the reason she decided to desert him and return to her father,” police said.
