Traffic police to check illegal plying of tractors in city

With frequent incidents of illegal plying of tractors in narrow lanes of the Capital, the Delhi Government has asked city traffic police to increase vigilance and has also launched a prosecution against them.

On Tuesday, the Government has sent a letter to the traffic police, mentioning the need for strict vigilance. The letter said several sources reported that tractors coming from neighboring Uttar Pardesh enter North and East Delhi. The city traffic police have been asked to increase their vigilance and send the prosecution list to the State Government.

According to the traffic department, around 50 tractors, which have illegally entered Delhi, have been prosecuted from various places in the city this month.

A senior police officer said that over the last six months, there has been an increase in the illegal plying of tractors. "We have seen that these tractors were plying in laxmi Nagar's narrow lanes and residential colonies. Although we have prosecuted some tractors, but still due to lack of vigilance there has been an increase in the plying of tractors inside New Delhi. A special team by the traffic police department has been formed to look into such cases," he said.

Significantly, in the first week of 2011 the Delhi Government has issued an order prohibiting the entry of tractor in New Delhi. Recently, residents of the Capital complained that though the entry of tractors on Delhi roads were banned a long time ago, owners of these vehicles have been flouting the ban and frequency of their entry in several colonies has since increased. "Besides creating congestion on narrow roads in residential colonies, their more frequent and free presence is increasing air and noise pollution. Some do not even display their number plates," a source said.
