Seismic retrofitting of lifeline structures on shaky ground?

SR

To reduce Delhi’s earthquake vulnerability, the erstwhile Sheila Dikshit Government had initiated a project for ‘developing and piloting a model programme for seismic evaluation and retrofitting of lifeline buildings in Delhi’. Under the programme, five ‘lifeline’ buildings, including the Delhi Police HQs, Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital, Government School at ludlow Castle, office of Divisional Commissioner at Shamnath Marg, and Delhi Secretariat were selected for retrofitting.

The project was initiated in 2005 and remains unfinished till date. It aims at developing an approach towards reducing the vulnerability of lifeline buildings to earthquakes.

The project was led by the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), office of Divisional Commissioner and the Government of NCT, Delhi. It is supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs. US-based NGO — GeoHazards International and Delhi-based NGO — were also assisting the project.
