Money makes the world go round

Devi Cherian

We are bringing up a whole new generation that is becoming more and more greedy with no care for reputation. Getting rich is the only mantra for these restless souls

The arrest of three cricketers playing IPl 6 doesn’t come as a surprise. In fact, it doesn’t even surprise the game fans. Whenever there is a match — at the national or international level — match fixing and or spot fixing are a forgone conclusion. I know many cricket fans who have stopped watching the game altogether. They feel that it is a waste of time watching a match which may be fixed.

So, it is not the fixing that has shocked the nation and other cricketing countries but the names of the players who have been arrested especially S Sreesanth. One would have thought that a player who has represented Team India and played many international matches would have been kept out of the whole mess. But his arrest and five-day police remand gives the impression that this time round, the police is going ahead with the crackdown even of those people who have ‘connections in high places’.

Those who are familiar with how things work in the betting world know how manipulation takes place. Who will win, who will lose, who will give away maximum number of runs, who will hit a six on which ball is all decided before hand. The arrest of three players and 11 bookies in the capital is just the tip of the ice-berg. These people are very small fish in the sea. Yet, the Mumbai and Delhi Police are basking in the glory of the arrests made and media praise.

The question the fan wants to know is when will the police catch the big people so that the nexus is broken once and for all. More importantly, will they go after them in the first place. Or will it be another story that the media plays on the news channels till another scandal or scam comes upIJ The sad part is that we have got used to being betrayed and cheated that each new scandal is soon forgotten.

When the news that Azaharuddin, the then Indian cricket captain’s involvement came to light in match fixing, the media wanted his blood.  Today, he is a Member of Parliament. letting down your supporters is not a crime today.

Politicians do it every day and get away with it. Bureaucrats are hand-in-glove with their bosses. The police doesn’t want to take any action because the minute they catch a culprit, the big boss sitting in his swanky office makes a call and the criminal walked free. Taking bribe and letting the criminal walk has become common.

last week, a senior CBI officer was caught taking bribe. In all probability he will be right out and back at his chair. Politicians’ relatives and friends use their connection to the big man to make money. The chalta hai attitude is ruining the entire nation. The system is corrupt and no one is willing to clean it. The governance is zero. When the Governing is non-functional how can one expect anything good to happen. Most Ministers are voted to power just because he the aam addmi’s language. It’s absurd to make a choice on such a frivolous reason. But the public has learnt to live with it.

Amidst this, a new generation is rising who thinks that bribing is the only way to reach the top.
