Here are six factors from Khloé Kardashian’s Strong looks Better Naked that can motivate and aid fitness enthusiasts to attain their goals with bliss
One of the biggest enigmas of American reality television is undoubtedly the popularity of E!’s Keeping Up With the Kardashians. The show revolves around the lives of the Kardashian-Jenner family and it’s difficult to grasp why millions of viewers across the world would be so keen to watch their fights, surgeries — botox and childbirth alike, marriages, divorces, vacations, parties, and so on. Familial issues are neither anything novel nor for mass consumption. Yet despite being notoriously put under constant scrutiny, it still manages to grasp the attention of its target audience. From Kim Kardashian to Caitlyn Jenner, the show has created super celebs (and entrepreneurs) out of the families who live a life filled with extravaganza. Of the same has also evolved a “best-selling writer” — the youngest Kardashian sister, Khloé.
Khloé has been consistently seen as an amiable, sane voice in the family. Or like she mentions, “the fat and funny one”. Running a clothesline called Dash with her sisters, hosting a talk show Kocktails with Khloé, and having hosted The X Factor (US), Khloé has also been a writer. She has authored Kardashian Konfidential earlier and her newest book is Strong looks Better Naked (SlBN).
Why Khloé is immensely popular is because of the numerous hues of her character. In this book, one sees her determination and grit, and it is inspiring for others to have a global celebrity talk about her struggles with her own body and other life changing experiences. Khloé underlines that everyone has problems, and every problem has a solution.
She has varied feathers on her cap. She is passionate and patient, friendly and catty, strong and emotional, chubby and slim, all at the same time! And it comes as no surprise then that her book is also an autobiography, fitness book, cook book, self-help etc all at once. SlBN is Khloé’s way of indulging her readers in balancing the body, mind, and soul. Her book is divided into sections accordingly.
Grief and fitness
Khloé writes about fitness coming to her rescue when she was on the verge of an emotional collapse. She speaks of crucial moments of tests: Her father’s death which led her to a state of denial, so much so that when she finally broke down, in order to control her, she needed to be given sedatives and passed out. Kourtney had to offer her to run their women’s fashion store Dash to reinstate her emotional health. She also writes about marital issues with lamar Odom, which made her work on her body harder.
living in Dallas with lamar at one point, Khloé’s debilitating homesickness almost got the better of her. That is when she started exercising. It distracted her from the paparazzi’s constant scrutiny of her most personal moments, and while fighting the negativity, it empowered her to be in control of her emotions.
Khloé’s routine
Khloé writes that health drinks, green or otherwise, do not aid her fitness regimen and instead, she prefers to start her day with steel cut oatmeal with flaxseed powder. Although, she has repeatedly endorsed the essence of drinking as many glasses of water as possible, it has been consistently debated among doctors and health experts and often seen as just a myth. Daily fluid intake requirement can also be met by other foods and drinks that we have and too much of anything, even if it’s water, could influence our health. But of course, a suitable amount of water intake has its many benefits as well.
About her routine, she writes that she wakes up at 5 am to drink a “huge” glass of water and black coffee. After working out till 8 am, she has another big glass of water and then eats oatmeal with protein shake. At 11 am, she snacks on apple with peanut butter and nuts. Her lunch at 1 pm is Chinese chicken salad. A snack at 3 pm includes chopped vegetables with homemade hummus and a tall glass of water. Dinner at 7 pm is steamed veggies and fish. At 9 pm, she has fruit with plain Greek yoghurt.
Healthy booze, Unhealthy dairy
Dr Philip Goglia, Nutritionist at Performance Fitness Concepts, writes in the book that single-ingredient alcohols include vodka or tequila which are made from potato, rye, grain, or agave. They are distilled and the sugars are removed. While wine and beer are multi-ingredient alcohols and contain yeast, mold and gluten. Either one should avoid them or drink three glasses of water for every glass of wine/beer to neutralise the sugar. Dairy, on the other hand, is inflammatory and elevates triglyceride levels. It’s bad for digestion and bowel movements.
Colours affect health
Khloé mentions that colours influence our appetite. For example, a red plate increases our appetite, darker coloured plates suppress it. Colours of the kitchen wall can also influence the appetite. Red, orange, yellow stimulate it and white, baby blue, mint green suppress it. It’s important to eat slow and chew every bite well, lest one swallows too much air and it slows digestion as well.
In the spirit of fitness
Brad Johnson, Pastor, California Community Church, writes in the book that no one is immune from pain and suffering, but it won’t last. life moves forward and circumstances will change. Khloé shares a few more tips on how to enhance one’s enthusiasm for a happy balance of health and heart. She urges readers to surround themselves with people who can be an enriching force in their life. One should also be around others who embody the qualities they admire: Compassion, empathy, humour, generosity, and honesty.
Recipe
Khloé also furnishes her readers with a lot of recipes that she follows in her diet. Sample this: Mix 10 ounces of baby spinach (rinsed and thoroughly chopped), 1 quarter fresh strawberries (cleaned, hulled, and sliced), two ounces of Gorgonzola crumbles, ¼ cup of candied walnuts and ½ cup sliced red grapes. Now, mix balsamic vinegar with brown sugar in a nonreactive saucepan over medium heat. Stir it till the sugar dissolves. When boiling, reduce the heat to low and simmer until the glaze is reduced by half. It takes about 15 minutes to thicken and reduce. Pour it into a jar and let it cool.
