Police seek V-C’s help
Seeking cooperation from university administration and students, the Delhi Police has written to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Vice-Chancellor Jagadesh Kumar, asking him to furnish details of whereabouts of 22 students, who were allegedly involved in anti-India sloganeering in an event held on the campus on Tuesday in support of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
Earlier, acting on a complaint of Chief Security Officer of JNU, the Delhi Police had on Thursday registered an FIR under Section 124A of IPC against the accused students.
According to FIRs there were two groups. “There were around 80 to 90 students in one group which was led by Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya lal and Umar Khalid and another group of 40 to 50 students led by Saurabh Kumar Sharma Joint Secretary JNUSU near Sabarmati Hostel. Both groups began to protest against each other and things went out of control. JNU security staff and local police didn’t let the two groups come closer. Police were informed about the incident,” the FIR stated.
The FIR stated the duty office of Vasant Kunj police station on February 9 received a letter from JNU Chief Security Officer Navin Yadav that said JNUSU Joint Secretary Saurabha Kumar Sharma issued a letter and a poster to Dean, Students’ Welfare.
Contrary to the claims that police had registered a case on the complaint of BJP MP Mahesh Giri, the Delhi Police stated that they had not registered an FIR on basis of the Parliamentarian complaint but took suo moto cognizance of anti-national activity.
Till now the university has debarred seven students. Besides, several leaders, including CPIM General Secretary Sitaram Yechury and Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi visited the campus on Saturday to express solidarity with the students.
