Jadavpur varsity clash: Bengal Guv seeks report

Bengal Governor KN Tripathi has sought report from the Jadavpur University Vice-Chancellor Suranjan Das over the reported clashes between the Jadavpur University Students’ Union and the supporters of ABVP over the screening of a Vivek-Agnihotri film Buddha in a Traffic Jam, sources said.

The two groups clashed against each other sporadically late on Friday evening leaving at least three persons injured and FIRs were lodged from both sides at the Jadavpur Police Station.

Tripathi who is also the Chancellor of the prestigious University “which was once known as the centre for excellence,” said it was “fast turning into centre for disturbance” and asked the authorities to “take stern action against it.”

The political fracas started late on Friday noon after the organisers went ahead with the screening of the movie despite a reported last-minute withdrawal of the permission of doing so, sources said.

Considering political nature of the movie the JUSU students resorted to sloganeering against the content of the movie and even raised “go back” slogan against the director when his car approached.

Subsequently the two groups clashed when some university students complained that they had been molested by some outsiders who had come during the occasion. Intermittent clashes broke out between the two groups that ended up with FIRs being lodged against each other and intervention of politicians like Rupa Ganguli.

later the BJP on Saturday said JU had become a centre for anti-national elements who should immediately be arrested. V-C Suranjan Das however reminded that the “police should remember that an FIR has been filed against the outsiders who had entered the campus and molested some of our students.”

later on Saturday evening the JUSU students took out a long procession in protest against the “Friday’s attempt by some political parties to destroy the rich heritage of JU.”

The University had of late seen repeated tensions between the students’ union that subscribes to extreme leftist ideas and other political parties like the BJP and even the Trinamool Congress Government.
