The Anti-Corruption and Security Unit (ACSU) of the International Cricket Council (ICC) is expected to meet Delhi Police officials to gain first-hand knowledge of the three arrested Rajasthan Royals (RR) players’ nexus with bookies.
In 2012 as well, after the arrest of sex and drugs racket kingpin — Vimal Marwah —who used to supply female escorts to parties to lure players — an ACSU team had come to Delhi. The team interacted with the sleuths of Crime Branch of the Delhi Police about involvement of the players.
Investigator linked to the on-going probe into Spot Fixing scandal said that Vimal Marwah may still be running her racket from inside the Tihar jail and Special Cell may question her again while re-investigating the case.
Police sources said that the Anti-Extortion Cell of Crime Branch was intercepting the phone calls of Marwah in 2012 — few months before the Indian Premiere league (IPl) began — and also intercepted one Mumbai-based-bookie's phone conversation with 50-year-old Marwah.
"He was informing her that he had lured one player and he will follow his instructions. She in turn asked him whether she could arrange other bookies for Spot Fixing," the sources said. Marwah ran a high-profile betting racket and preparations were on to bet in the upcoming IPl matches.
Marwah, a BEd teacher, was arrested along with two associates, asked the bookie to come to Sri lanka along with the 'fixed player' and she will arrange escorts for him.
She also directed him to search for more 'vulnerable' players. However, after intercepting her call, the Anti-Extortion Cell nabbed her while she was about to board her flight.
After some weeks, the ACSU of the ICC reached the Capital and un-officially met the investigating team of the Crime Branch as ACSU of the ICC had also some tip-off about Marwah's proximity to some bookies and cricketers. However, they failed to find out the name of the player.
With the arrest of the three RR players — Ajit Chandila, Shantakumaran Sreesanth and Ankeet Chavan along with 11 bookies - now, again the ACSU is expected to reach Delhi soon in order to obtain information from the Delhi Police.
Senior police officials said that they would talk to ICC as well as Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials on Monday, if approached.
"We have already shared information with a senior BCCI official who approached us on the first day itself as well as on Friday," an official said.
