Maatr writer Michael Pellico tells SHAlINI SAKSENA why he thinks the movie will have a global appeal
Tell us how you got to writing Maatr...
I wrote it to bring to the attention of the world the plight of rape victims both in the violence of the rape but mostly how these women are tread as the instigators of this crime by police, counts and even family members after they report the rape.
How did the association with Bollywood happenIJ
I was very fortunate to be introduced to Ashtar Sayed, a brilliant and dedicated Indian director. We immediately formed a close bond because we shared a passion for the plight of women, not just about rape but on a wide range of social injustices women face daily .
You have written for several documentary films. Was it different to write a full length movieIJ
A full length story gives you time to develop characters with more depth and see them evolve as the story develops. I love both.
How is Bollywood different from HollywoodIJ
They are more the same than different. Both have great actors, actresses, technicians and directors. The major difference is that Bollywood movies are made with an Indian audience in mind whereas an American film is made for an international audience. Maatr was made for an international audience because it deals with an international subject.
Any pointers you picked up from BollywoodIJ
I like the way Indian films depict serious issues in a more light-hearted way. They are visually very appealing .
Any other project Bollywood projects that you are working onIJ
I am currently working on a story that is also located in India and hopefully can get Raveena interested in. I loved working with her!
Why do you say that Maatr has a global audienceIJ
This is because violence against women is a global issue. Women face daily insults, disrespect and demeaning situations. I want women to organise and speak with one voice. There is strength in numbers as workers found out when they organised. Religious and political leaders quake in fear that this day will come.
What should the viewers expect from MaatrIJ
Women should expect and get a sense of strength and empowerment. They will see in Raveena themselves and realise that they are not weak and helpless requiring the support of men but equal in every way. Men will realise that women are their equal and must be treated as equals. To me, violence is the result of the lack of respect that many men have of women. I hope Maatr changes this!
