TN RAGHUNATHA

The revived south-west monsoon made its presence felt in Maharashtra, as heavy rain and the downpour-related incidents claimed as many as 12 lives across the State during the last 48 hours.

While eight persons died of lightning strikes in Nanded, latur and Osmanabad districts of Marathwada region, one person drowned in Anjana river in Kannad in Aurangabad district. A 25-year-man was swept away in a swollen nullah at Kurla in north-central Mumbai.

Over Friday night and Saturday, heavy rains were reported from all five regions of the state.

The weather bureau has for the next 24 hours forecast intermittent rains and showers in the city and suburbs with isolated heavy falls.

The Mumbai city and suburbs on an average received 25 to 30 mm rainfall.  Much to the relief of Mumbaikars, there were no major disruptions in traffic on city roads and suburban railway tracks.

While a landslide was reported along the road connecting the hill station of lonavla to Pawana dam near Pune, the Dapoli-Harne road had to be closed for traffic as it lay under thick sheets of water at various places.
