Gujarat has become the first State in India to have a strict law against cow slaughter as Gujarat Government on Saturday notified rules for the Gujarat Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act, 2017.

The Act has provision for life-term for any person found guilty of cow slaughter or having direct involvement with the cow slaughter apart from fine up to Rs 5 lakh. The amendment to this effect was brought in by Gujarat Government on the last day of the budget session that ended on March 31, 2017.

Informing the mediapersons at the State capital Gandhinagar, Minister of State for Home in Vijay Rupani Government, Pradeepsinh Jadeja said that the rules have been notified after suggestions from a panel on the issue.

“With the new amended act in effect there will be life imprisonment for those who slaughter cows in the State,” said Jadeja.
