A section of the judicial fraternity has come stoutly behind former Supreme Court Judge, Justice Ashok Ganguly crying out in “disbelief” against charges of sexual harassment levelled against him by a law intern.
While a visibly perturbed Justice Ganguly who was currently functioning as the Chairman of West Bengal Human Rights Commission refused to comment his former colleagues reacted sharply in disbelief saying they would “not believe the charges.”
While former lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said he “don’t believe this” as he had known Justice Ganguly “for the past 35-40 years” as a perfect gentleman “leading a very happy family life,” former Chief Justice Altmas Kabir defended him saying he was justified in not resigning as the State WBHRC chief.
Mere levelling of charges against anyone did not necessarily mean that he had committed the wrong and hence was fit to be removed from his post, Justice Kabir said when asked to comment on the demands being raised by certain quarters demanding his resignation.
Earlier, Trinamool Congress MP and senior counsel Kalyan Banerjee had demanded Justice Ganguly’s resignation from the WBHRC post.
The former Supreme Court Judge had earlier faced criticisms from the ruling party politicians for passing a host of orders implicating the human rights records of the State Government.
