Didi vows 'revenge' against SEC

Saugar Sengupta

The Bengal Chief Minister has vowed “revenge” against the State Election Commission for daring to challenge her Government’s writ on issues related to the panchayat elections.

Holding an election rally at Joynagar in South 24 Parganas, the Chief Minister on Saturday said she would “take revenge democratically” against the SEC “for not accepting our proposals”.

Justifying her party’s refusal to join the all-party meeting called by the SEC on Saturday, Banerjee said she found no logic behind responding to the SEC call. “Have they listened to usIJ They have thrown out all our suggestions on the polls. So why should we listen to themIJ”

Playing the Ramzan card the Chief Minister told the rally how “the Commission got the elections clash with the holy months of Ramzan”. She said, “They did not listen to us” and wondered “what if the polls are conducted during Durga Pujas!”

lambasting the CPI(M), Congress and the BJP for hatching a conspiracy “to negate my Government’s achievements”, Banerjee said, “Our party will go all alone and finally will win throwing this notorious clique out of Bengal.”

On the Congress-led UPA Government, she said the “Congress and the left are comrade in arms. The UPA is squeezing Bengal dry in terms of resources. But we shall not beg them for alms. Tomorrow Delhi will have to come to Bengal begging.”

Reacting sharply to the Chief Minister’s statements, senior Congress leader Abdul Mannan said, “It is humiliating to respond to the statements made by an insane and opportunist lady who tries to exploit Muslim sentiments at the drop of hat. It is not the Commission but the CM who delayed the polls either by refusing to give security forces or by dragging the matter to the court on the issue of phases. The SEC was trying to hold polls since April. The Muslims are not fools as not to understand her ploy.”

CPI(M) leader Rabin Deb said, “We have brought their conduct to the notice of the SEC which has duly taken the cognizance of it.”BJP State president Rahul Sinha said, “By refusing to join the meeting, the Trinamool Congress is challenging the Supreme Court verdict. The SEC should again haul the State to the court.”Meanwhile, sources in the Government said the first 130 companies of Central forces were scheduled to arrive in Bengal on July 7.
