A 26-year-old woman jumped on a Metro track on Saturday but escaped unhurt as the driver of a train coming in stopped it well before reaching her, police said. The woman however claimed that she fell. She has been identified as Kirti, a resident of Madipur in West Delhi. According to police, the woman was under depression and did not suffer any injury after falling on the track at Madipur Metro station at 11.40 pm as the alert train driver immediately applied brakes and avoided hitting her.
An eyewitness told the police that the Kirti, a resident of Madipur, was waiting for the CP-bound Metro at the platform. “As the train approached the station, she jumped on the track. The driver applied the brakes and she escaped unhurt,” the eyewitness told the police.
According to police, Kirti, who had fainted, was taken to the nearby Achary Bikshu Hospital from where she was discharged after preliminary examination. Kirti’s husband, who runs a photography shop, told police that his wife was undergoing the medical treatment of depression. She left the house to meet a friend but did not return back.
In her statement to police, she said she did not remember how she fell on the tracks. But, police claimed she jumped, adding she was depressed at being childless even after six years of marriage. Police said that they have retrieved the CCTV footage of the incident. This year, five people have been killed in separate incidents of suicide at Metro stations.
