Bulletproof windows for Aerocity

To allay security concerns, the hotel coming up at Aerocity hospitality district will have to install an additional layer of bulletproof film over toughened window panes.

The security agencies examining the threat perception to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport from the upcoming hospitality district at Aerocity have recommended that hotels install bulletproof films over toughened windows. The experts have proffered this suggestion after examining the window panes of the hotel in the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) complex in Chandigarh.

The bulletproof films will provide an extra layer of security to the hotels, feel security experts. The DRDO, after inspection, has found the security arrangements provided by JW Marriott adequate and thus, given its go-ahead for the launch. However, operations at the 523 room property have only partially begun since Delhi Police’s licencing branch is yet to give clearance for rooms facing the airstrip. “These rooms will be available only after they meet the additional security criteria,” informed an airport official.

A senior security official involved with the security review of the upcoming Aerocity complex said that the bulletproof windows were tested at DRDO for durability and level of protection.

“The experts tested the resilience of the bulletproof windows by having a model of an aircraft 10 metre away and shooting at the glass with different types of arsenal. Though the bullets were able to breach the glass after five attempts, they could not however, reach the aircraft model. Satisfied with the test results, the experts were at ease with the security cover provided by the windows,” the official added. He also said the recommendation to install an extra layer of film over the bulletproof windows would further secure the premises.
