With a week into office, the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) has its hands full with several campus issues. However, since it is holiday season, the union has decided to keep those issues on hold until mid-month and focus on women’s security. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) along with DUSU will be forming a human chain on October 7 to show solidarity in protecting women. According to senior leaders of the ABVP, the chain is a cry for women’s security and respect.

A couple of days back, ABVP had also stated that they would be protesting against the concept of love jehad and fight for the rights of women. Following that movement, they are doing a nationwide campaign where volunteers of ABVP will form a human chain across university campuses. In Delhi, ABVP along with DUSU will form this human chain in North Campus.

“We want to raise our voice for women safety. There is a need for change and women need to be respected in this country. Thus, the chain is our way of showing solidarity in bringing back the lost respect for women and ensuring complete security for them,” said Saket Bahuguna, Delhi Secretary, ABVP.

Other than women security, the chain is also against use of drugs and intoxication. According to ABVP leaders, the two causes are interlinked and need to be addressed together.

Since the holidays at DU have begun, the DUSU has to wait till October 14 before it starts tackling issues pertaining to the college, campus and student welfare. “DUSU and ABVP are going to take up the issue of concessional Metro passes for DU students and revaluation with special chance first. We will do so once the college reopens on October 14. We want to make an impact with these protests,” added Bahuguna.
