Store owner, 89, swats robber with golf club

An 89-year-old Washington state storekeeper says she swatted at a sword-wielding robber with a golf club after he pushed her to the ground.

KREM-TV reports that Miyo Koba’s son says she was not hurt in the weekend scuffle in Moses lake. Police recovered the cash register taken Sunday from Frank’s Superette.

Police say the intruder was armed with a 3-foot-long sword and rode away on a BMX bike. Koba said the robber ordered his mother to open the till and she refused.

Koba says she was pushed as he fled and she fell down. She then grabbed a golf club that was behind the counter and tried to swing at his head. She couldn’t reach, so she says she settled for hitting his legs.

Police are still searching for the man.

Naked man arrested outside White House

Secret Service police on Friday arrested a man who stripped naked outside the White House fence and fought with officers.

Michel Bechard was then charged with assault and indecent exposure. Bechard had approached uniformed Secret Service officers at a White House security checkpoint at about 3 pm. EDT/1900 GMT and then “proceeded to get fully undressed,” a spokesman said. Officers subdued the man, covered him and sent him to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries suffered in the tussle.

A reporter said that Bechard’s ID was rejected because it was from a foreign country and the man then began undressing while insisting that he had to keep his appointment with Obama.

Theft of urinal items stumps officials

Officials in Alabama say they’re investigating a series of thefts involving metal urinal components from restaurant bathrooms.

Jefferson County sheriff’s spokesman Randy Christian told Al.com on Wednesday that authorities have been told of a man walking into men’s rooms and stealing flush valves and supply lines from urinals. Authorities say the man left each business without being noticed.

Christian says that the pipes weren’t made of copper and would have little value if a thief tried selling them as scrap metal. Christian says officials are unsure why the items are being stolen. (AP)

Anonymous donor leaves hidden cash

Some San Francisco-area residents are flush with cash, thanks to an anonymous donor who has been hiding envelopes full of money in secret spots around the city.

The donor has been conducting the Northern California treasure hunt by posting clues to a Twitter account called HiddenCash, sending followers to uncover envelopes filled with about $100 taped behind stop signs, bulldozers, fire hydrants and dumpsters.

The donor describes the five-day-old game as way to give back to society after making millions in the city’s real estate market.

By late Wednesday, more than 190,000 people were following the Twitter account. “I want the spotlight on what I’m doing and trying to do,” he told CNN. “I have no plans to stop anytime soon. I’m planning to continue this indefinitely into the future.”

The donor has encouraged winners to tweet photos of their winnings. So far, the experiment has appeared to be a success.

A local television web producer treated co-workers to pizza, while another donated the cash to San Francisco’s St. Anne’s church, according to postings on Twitter.

Teacher Shaves Student's Armpit

A school in Victoria, Australia is in a bit of a scrape after a teacher shaved the armpit of a 14-year-old special education student in class.

The girl’s underarm hair was removed against her will by an unidentified teacher during a class on personal care at the Wangaretta District Specialist School, a faciliity children with intellectual and physical disabilities, according to 3AW.

“I spoke to the teacher the very next day and she told me she has the right to do it, it’s part of the curriculum,” Melissa Woods, the student’s mother, told the station on Thursday.

The girl, who has ADHD and a neurodevelopmental disorder known as microcephaly, was distraught after the incident.

“She came home in tears and said, “They shaved my arms”, and that she hadn’t wanted it done. I did not know that they would make an example of my daughter this way” she told the Herald Sun.

Woods says the teacher told her that her daughter would get made fun of if she didn’t shave her armpits.
