SHIBAJI ROYCHOUDHURY

Overpriced but interesting

The ASUS padphone is 4.3 inch AMOlED display phone with a 1.5 Ghz processor running ice cream sandwich 4.0. These specs ensure it to be a pretty good phone. However, what sets this apart is that the phone docks into a 10.1 inch tablet allowing for seamless usage between the phone and tablet.

The shared hardware between the devices allows you to pick up where you left off on all your apps. The tablet does have its own battery and charges the phone when docked in. If you have work that requires a lot of typing, the tablet can be docked into a fully functional keyboard, which has its own battery and charges the phone when docked. A rather bizarre accessory that comes with this device is a stylus that doubles up as a Bluetooth headset when the tablet is in use, basically expecting you to talk into a pen.

The device runs an almost stock version of Android. But, since it is ICS, designed to optimise both phone and tablet experiences, the system looks and runs well. On the whole, it is a very interesting concept and a pleasure to use.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t give the premium feel that a price tag of Rs65,000 deserves, as the device is chunky and heavy and doesn’t match up to top-end products this sort of budget could get you. With a device such as this one could well be the future of our increasingly seamless world of technology. But, there still seems to be some way to go for this particular experiment can pave its way among consumers.  But for now, when one can get an iPhone 4S, an iPad together at a lesser price, the latter is a better option.
