Talking points

Here are some selected moments that stood out and added excitement to this series

Punishment for homework not done

India were leading the series 2-0 but what took the limelight from the Indian camp was turmoil in the Australian camp. Coach Mickey Arthur wanted to know where the team and the players had erred and for that wanted three points from each player to be either mailed or messaged to him. When vice-captain Shane Watson, Mitchell Johnson, James Pattinson and Usman Khawaja failed to complete the task, they were suspended for the Mohali Test match.

Pitches

When you’re playing at home, you should make use of the conditions and so pitches in Chennai, Hyderabad and then Delhi were tailor-made for spin. Australia capsized in each of them, especially in second innings while the Indians made merry. The third Test in Mohali though was a batsman’s track and even then the Aussie batting line up didn’t score big.

Finally some sledging

On the second day of the final Test in Delhi, Ravindra Jadeja and David Earner got into some verbal duel to liven up in what was a dead contest as India had already taken an unassailable 3-0 lead. Though what transpired is unknown an Australian team that does not sledge is an unknown entity.

Dhawan’s dhamaka

He has waited for his big chance for many years now and when it came, Delhi’s Shikhar Dhawan made the most of it by cracking a 187 on debut which was the fastest Test century by a player playing his first innings.

Ashwin stands tall

He was criticized for his flat bowling during the England Test series in 2012 but Ravichandran Ashwin was a different bowler in this series. He was giving the ball the required air and his variations, like the carom-ball, made the Kangaroos hop. He started the series with seven wickets in an innings and twelve in the first Test while ending with a whopping 29 wickets which made him India’s highest wicket-taker in a four-match series against Australia.
